AUSN School of Medicine Institutional Review Board (AUSN IRB)

The AUSN School of Medicine Institutional Review Board (AUSN IRB) is officially registered with the U.S. Office of Human Research Subject Protections (OHRP) under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Our registration number is IRB00009932. The AUSN IRB is the committee that is been formally designated, organized and registered to approve, monitor, and review all research involving humans.

An important goal of the IRB is to protect people (human subjects) from physical or psychological harm. The purpose of the review process is to assure, both in advance and by periodic review, that appropriate steps are taken to protect the any humans participating as subjects in a research study. An important goal of the IRB is to protect people (human subjects) from physical or psychological harm, by reviewing research protocols and related materials. The protocol review assesses the ethics of the research and its methods, promotes fully informed and voluntary participation by prospective subjects capable of making such choices (or, if that is not possible, informed permission given by a suitable proxy), and seeks to maximize the safety of subjects.
IRBs are responsible for critical oversight functions for research conducted on human subjects. Currently the AUSN IRB reviews research proposals associated with AUSN, proposed by faculty, researchers, students and others, in all fields, especially where that research may involve contact with human subjects, in accordance with laws, rules and regulations of the United States and consistent with international research ethical norms.
The members of the AUSN IRB come from a range of backgrounds, with a range of specialties which include Medicine, Dermatology, Psychology, Native American Culture, Environmental Sciences, Law, Bioethics, Social and Human Sciences, and Biochemistry.
