The Sovereign Nations Scholar Program provides students an additional opportunity to finance their education. As a member of an Indigenous Community in the Philippines, I am a passionate advocate for Sustainable Development.  I believe that there is greater work to mobilize the Filipino people to become more resilient when it comes to the impact of climate change as the Philippines has been ranked 1st in terms of mortality rate due to climate change related disasters.

I attended the 7th Youth Peace Ambassador Workshop held in Kathmandu and Lumbini, Nepal on January 2014; the 10th Youth Peace Ambassador Workshop in Purkuwerto and Bandung City, Indonesia in May 2015; and YPA13 in Bataan. I am really thankful for the priceless opportunity to meet passionate people from around the globe who shares the same vision. I strongly believe that we are just stewards of the Earth; hence it is our responsibility to protect and sustain this planet for the next generations to come. After my AUSN Masters degree I could contribute more to the community, and I am now pursuing my Ph.D.

The factors to be considered when granting a student the esteemed designation of Sovereign Nations Scholar, include but are not limited to the following: the student’s educational financial need, academic merit, maturity level, ability and potential for success in the academic and educational programs at AUSN, extraordinary prior and current academic achievement, extraordinary community and extra-curricular experiences and service, etc.

Sovereign Nations Scholars are primarily selected based upon evidence of their exemplary commitment to family, community and society, as well as to those individuals exemplifying the promotion of human respect, human dignity, a quest for knowledge and the pursuit of truth.

I worked in Pathfinder International as Project officer and acting as Team leader, out of which I  coordinated the activities aimed to promote  sexual and reproductive health and rights, within communities on the base  of the reference hospitals; supervised  and coordinated the activities of the Project’s assistants  and Advisors within the hospitals and in the communities; trained the Health services Providers, project Assistants, Advisors and Pair educators,

in matters of gender equality, sexual and reproductive rights, gender-based violence, discriminations and other social and moral problems which are faced by our population. I also promoted the visibility, inclusion, the rights of health services access, educated and sensitized the key population within the communities, on the how to benefit from the healthcare services provided in public hospitals; advocated the rights of key population, in cooperation with police and other entities, which work for assuring individual and social rights and security. I am currently working for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (since 2015-2018) as Community Liaison Officer / Resettlement’s Engagement Officer, conducting engagement meetings with community members on matters of resettlement and the community members’ livelihood after the resettlement process and others projects, which can ensure community development.

My desire of pursuing bioethical studies prevails within me, with a conviction of making the world a better place to be lived on the base of bioethical principles. Furthermore, my professional experience on the matters of community health, gender equality and violence based on gender, gave me a chance of working with vulnerable populations such as people affected with HIV/AIDS, Sex workers, and the community members as a whole. Such experience strengthened within me, the ability of community engagement and the desire of pursuing bioethical research on the matters of bioethics and community engagement, focusing mainly on the issues of community health. This is the reason why I joined the MBGPH (Master of Bioethics and Global Public Health) degree program in order to conduct my research, seeking for demonstrating how bioethical knowledge can adequately contribute to the improvement of community Health.

The issue of community health is one of the biggest challenges in many of our African societies and I am convinced that one of the reasonable means of handling such challenges is developing bioethics for community engagement on matters of community health, which will be a source from which the community members will be educated or sensitized on the referred issue, the fact that will help them with knowledge through which, they will be aware on how to keep their communities healthier and better places to be lived. My motivation of studying at American University of Sovereign Nations is rooted in the mission, vision and the values which, guide the principles of AUSN as an academic institution. For instance, the fact of being in a bioethical master program which is meant for “individuals who are committed to learn inter-cultural bioethics applicable for community, global leadership and dedicated to promoting ethical public policy and practices and protecting the well-being of the environment and public of all nations and all peoples”; and the emphasis on the racially nondiscriminatory policy, revealed to me that the AUSN is an academic institution with global and inclusive principles. It is from such principles that I expect to strengthen my desire of inspiring people to promote the spirit of recognition of human dignity.
