AUSN Cooperation Agreement with The World is Just a Book Away (WIJABA), Los Angeles, USA

American University of Sovereign Nations (AUSN) is honored to have signed a MOU with The World is Just a Book Away (WIJABA).

The World is Just a Book Away is an anthology edited by University of Southern California (USC) professor James J. Owens that captures the stories of how books and reading inspired some of the world s most prominent people. Recognizing the life-changing nature of reading, Owens set out in 2002 to create this deeply moving book. At first glance, the sixty contributors to this anthology may not seem to have much in common yet they all share their personal love of books and reading in The World is Just a Book Away. This book takes readers on a unique journey through personal stories from five Nobel Peace Prize laureates, actors, royalty, world leaders, scientists, humanitarians, and many more.

The World is Just a Book Away (WIJABA) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Santa Monica, CA that seeks to build leaders for the future by empowering children to change their own lives and communities through books, libraries, and educational programs. Promoting literacy and education helps end the perpetual cycle of poverty that these children are currently experiencing.

Mission: To promote literacy and education by developing libraries and programs that plant the seeds of leadership, environmental consciousness, and community connection.

WIJABA currently works with disadvantaged communities that have suffered through great adversity in Indonesia (since 2009), Mexico (since 2012), and Los Angeles (since 2016) including:

  • Sidoarjo, Indonesia: Devastated by world's worst mudflow disaster

  • Padang, Indonesia: Recovering from a tsunami and numerous earthquakes

  • Bali, Indonesia: Coping with a significant orphan population

  • Chihuahua, Mexico: Afflicted by major social and economic upheaval

  • Los Angeles, California: Experiencing diminished access to books in underprivileged communities

WIJABA libraries are centers of literacy and learning that also serve as community centers and classrooms for WIJABA facilitated programs.  All libraries are within a 2-hour radius of a hub office to facilitate community partnerships.  In just 10 years, WIJABA's libraries and impact have reached over 120,000+ children with:

  • 5 Educational Programs

  • 1 Horse Library

  • 100 Libraries

  • 3 Mobile Libraries
